Adding Dimension To Mockups In Photoshop

Adding Dimension To Mockups In Photoshop

Draw an Illustration

For this particular session, Michael drew an illustration as shown in the image below. You can initially begin with a sketch and then dive right into drawing an illustration. Define all shapes into layers. This helps texture each shape layer by layer.

Pro tip: Make sure you're in RGB as it has a wider color gamut than CMYK. Put the resolution at 300. Then select 'file' and 'export' it as a .PSD file.

Add Textures in Photoshop

As you export the file as .PSD and open in it Photoshop, you'll notice that the layers of the file also get exported similar to those in Illustrator.

Select Finder and go to textures. Pick a craft texture called Woodblock and use the .PSD version. Drag it onto your composition. Cover the entire screen by zooming in the texture and press multiply. This will help put the texture on the composition.

Pro tip: If you click Command on any shape and select, it will select every pixel on that layer. This will form a trail around that shape. If you click on mask, it will only apply the texture to that particular shape.

Establish a Light Source

Establish a light source in the top left corner of the composition. Create a layer on top and command-click the frame layer. Select the Gradient Tool and set it to white and transparent.

If the lighting is too intense, change the opacity of the light in accordance with what best fits the composition.

To increase the shadow, take the Feather Brush and set it at 100%. Increase the size completely, pick a black color and then add shadows in the edges. Then set it to multiply.

Pro tip: Add an extra hotspot light layer by simply coloring the brush white and adding the color on the top left edge.

Add Rim Light

Click Command and then select the frame layer. Make a layer below the frame layer and call it Rim Light. Select Option and Delete to fill the selection with white. This turns off the frame layer and makes it white.

Create Shadows

Go underneath the room light layer and fill it with black. Then click on Multiply. Choose Filter and then convert it to smart filters. Select Blur and then click on Gaussian Blur. Put it on 21.9 and turn down the opacity to 40%. Press Option, Drag and then Duplicate it. Make into a staggered shadow.

Pro tip: Everything in black needs to be multiplied. You can harden and soften the shadow as you like.

For smaller shapes, use the Granular Brush. Hit Command and add a new layer. Set the brush to a white color at 100% with feather and paint to get a lighter part on the yellow. This will form the highlight.

Set it to Multiply and turn the opacity down. Create a rim light layer below the lightning layer. Set to white and then delete. This will form a rim light on the edge.

Do this with all the other shapes by adding dimensions through shadow and light. See the image below for reference.

AR Frames

Split the composition into multiple frames, forming transparent .PNGs. See the images below for reference.

On the iPad, click on slide AR. Add the composition from the photo library. Add all the other frames one by one. Click done and set the target image. This will activate the AR as soon as it sees the target image. See the images below for reference.

Click on edit to control the depth of the image. You can also re-arrange the layer from the side panel.

Voila, you are done! You have mastered adding dimensions to your art in Adobe Photoshop and successfully used AR frames.
